Bo WANG

Bo Wang, b.1982, China

Born in Chongqing, China. Bo Wang is an artist, filmmaker, and researcher. With a background in physics, Wang received his Master of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts, New York in 2011 and is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Wang’s works often delve into the sociopolitical and socioeconomic subjects across East Asia, using videos to explore the intricate relations and tensions within.

Wigs were vital for the rise of the Asian economy in the post-war era. In the 1960s, it was the fourth-largest export product in Hong Kong. Hong Kong functioned as not merely the gateway of Mao’s China (the source of hair supplies) and the insatiable Western market, but also as a crucial bridge connecting the two worlds in the Cold War. An Asian Ghost Story departs from the United States embargo on the hair trade, known as the “Communist Hair Ban,” in the year 1965. The work examines the role of Hong Kong as a transient space that mediates between the worlds as well as the lingering modernity in East Asia.
