Sasha LITVINTSEVA & Beny WAGNER
Sasha Litvintseva, b.1989, Russia & Beny Wagner, b.1985, Germany
Sasha Litvintseva is an artist, filmmaker and writer, whose work is situated on the uncertain thresholds of the perceptible and the communicable, organism and environment, and knowledge regimes and power, at the intersection of media, ecology and the history of science. Since 2018, much of her work has been produced in the context of the ongoing collaboration with Beny Wagner.
Constant is a history of measurement. The artist traces the three shifts of measurement standardization in human history. The three shifts also represent how measurement that used to take the human body as the basic unit was detached from embodiment into abstract knowledge. Such a process of detachment relationship enabled us to turn the natural environment beyond ourselves into a knowledge and recognizable object. It is inseparable from the personal “individualization” that dominated after Enlightenment in the West. Visual images rendered from different imaging methods are utilized in Constant as well, including 360-degree camera and point cloud imaging, to underscore the tension in between “visualization” and measurement.
